Born in Takefu in 1948, Takeshi Saji is a skilled craftsman and traditional forger. Takefu is well known for its 700-year history of producing Echizen Uchi-Hamono. After graduating from junior high school, Takeshi spent three years at the nearby "Blacksmith Training School" learning fundamental forging and blacksmithing techniques. Under the cautious supervision of his father and mentor, second-generation smith Harukichi Saji, he began making knives at the age of eighteen. His tutor informed him that he was the third generation of smiths and that there was nothing more he could teach him when he turned thirty. He said that he will be allowed to manufacture his own knives.
